MELCC Awards 2016

Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh. 26th October, 2016

The Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh hosted one of the highlights of the local business calendar, the Midlothian and East Lothian Chamber of Commerce annual Business Excellence Awards Ceremony on October 28th, 2015.

As always, the Midlothian and East Lothian Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Excellence Awards, Exhibition and Dinner was a friendly and busy affair.

Over 300 luminaries from the local business community were in attendance, showcasing the innovation, output and skill of the workforce in and around Mid and East Lothian. The highlight of the evening was, of course, the award ceremony itself with a select band of winners and highly commended businesses picking up the awards.

First, the exhibition which highlighted the broad range of companies across the two regions, from hospitality venues and hotels to craft breweries, accountancy firms and recruitment companies, among others.
The atmosphere in the room was warm as friends and acquaintances caught up and many people formed new connections.

Next up was dinner, a well-orchestrated affair as the professional catering staff at the Brunton served up an impressive amount of dishes quickly and efficiently, as they have done in previous years.

Let’s make Scotland a greener place to do business

Guest speaker for the evening was Chris Stark, Director of Energy and Climate Change, The Scottish Government. Chris spoke about the Climate Change Act 2009, and how the Scottish Government voted unanimously to target an 80% reduction of carbon emissions at the levels measured in 1990 by 2050.

He went on to say that Scotland provides all of its electricity with very few carbon emissions, meaning that Scotland already punches well above its weight globally when it comes to producing energy in a clean and sustainable manner. He also asked Scottish businesses to be more resource efficient to make a greener and more environmentally responsible economy for future generations.

Finally, Chris made an impassioned ‘call to arms’ to ensure that Scottish businesses ‘ruthlessly exploited’ the growing opportunities provided by the need to reduce the carbon footprint by 2050 and called on business leaders to do their part to hit the 80% target.

Campbell Chalmers, Director of RNIB – the chosen charity for this year’s event, said a few words about the positive impact his organisation makes to the quality of life for visually impaired people in Scotland. He then went on to thank the members of the audience for helping RNIB raise over £1500 to ensure the production of a children’s audio book in time for Christmas, earning a warm applause.

The rest of the evening consisted of the awards ceremony, which saw the best and brightest businesses in Mid and East Lothian rewarded for their efforts. This was followed by a raffle draw, the proceeds of which went to RNIB – (note to organisers, the Network ROI table didn’t win a single prize).
